Industrial Toxicology: An Overview of Occupational Health and Safety Issues
Industrial toxicology is the study of the adverse effects of chemicals and physical agents on workers and the environment. Industrial toxicology covers a wide range of topics, such as exposure assessment, hazard identification, dose-response evaluation, risk characterization, risk management, and risk communication. Industrial toxicology also deals with the prevention and control of occupational diseases and injuries caused by chemical and physical hazards.
Some examples of occupational hazards that may pose toxicological risks are:

The main objectives of industrial toxicology are to protect the health and safety of workers and the public from harmful exposures to occupational hazards; to comply with the relevant laws and regulations regarding occupational health and safety; and to promote a healthy and productive work environment. To achieve these objectives, industrial toxicologists use various methods and tools, such as:
Toxicological testing and research to determine the toxicity and mechanism of action of occupational hazards
Environmental monitoring and sampling to measure the levels of occupational hazards in the workplace and the ambient environment
Biomonitoring and biological markers to assess the internal dose and biological effects of occupational hazards in workers
Epidemiological studies and surveillance to investigate the occurrence and patterns of occupational diseases and injuries in workers and populations
Risk assessment and risk management to estimate the potential health risks of occupational hazards and to implement appropriate measures to reduce or eliminate them

Industrial toxicology is an interdisciplinary field that requires collaboration among various professionals, such as toxicologists, industrial hygienists, occupational physicians, occupational nurses, epidemiologists, engineers, chemists, biologists, physicists, statisticians, lawyers, regulators, policy makers, managers, workers' representatives, and others.
