The film's opening scenes were the only ones filmed in New York City, while the rest of the movie was shot entirely on location in various places in Italy. To create the fictional town of Mongibello, the filmmakers used the scenic cliffside resort town of Positano and several picturesque villages on the islands of Ischia and Procida, which are located near Naples in the Tyrrhenian Sea.[6] However, the production faced many challenges due to the frequent and unpredictable rain that plagued the region. Minghella recalled that \"we had to deliver this gorgeous Mediterranean world, this beautiful world of Southern Italy, and we could never get Italy to turn beautiful...We would divide the scenes up, often into words, and go out and get two or three words and then it would start to rain and we'd have to go back in again.\"[4] The scenes that were supposed to take place in San Remo, another coastal town in northern Italy, were actually filmed in Anzio, a resort town near Rome that had a similar look and feel. Some of the most well-known locations that appeared in the film were the Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps and Piazza di Spagna in Rome, and the Caffà Florian in the Piazza San Marco in Venice.[6] 061ffe29dd
