How to Use the Rock Classification Gizmo
To use the Rock Classification Gizmo, you will need a computer or a tablet with an internet connection and a web browser. You will also need a student exploration sheet and an answer key, which you can download from the same page.
Once you open the Gizmo, you will see a screen like this:
The Gizmo has four main parts:
The SAMPLES pane, where you can select a rock sample to examine.
The CHARACTERISTICS pane, where you can see the features of the selected rock sample and compare it with other samples.
The CLASSIFICATION pane, where you can classify the selected rock sample as igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic based on its characteristics.

How to Classify Rocks Using the Gizmo
To classify rocks using the Gizmo, you need to follow these steps:
Select a rock sample from the SAMPLES pane by clicking on it. You can use the arrows to scroll through the samples.
Observe the texture, color, composition, and other features of the selected rock sample in the CHARACTERISTICS pane. You can use the magnifying glass to zoom in or out on the sample. You can also turn on Show common characteristics to see a list of typical features for each type of rock.
Based on the characteristics of the selected rock sample, decide whether it is an igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic rock. You can use the definitions and examples in the CLASSIFICATION pane to help you. Click on the appropriate button to classify the sample.
If you are correct, you will see a green check mark and a brief explanation of why your answer is correct. If you are incorrect, you will see a red X and a hint to help you correct your answer.
Repeat steps 1-4 for all 12 rock samples. You can use the Reset button to start over at any time.
After you have classified all 12 rock samples, you can check your progress by clicking on Show summary in the CLASSIFICATION pane. You will see a table that shows how many samples you have correctly classified for each type of rock.
