The next day, Quasimodo rescues La Esmeralda from the gallows and brings her to Notre Dame, where he claims sanctuary for her. He shows her his cell and tells her that she is safe there. He also gives her a whistle that she can use to call him if she needs help. La Esmeralda is grateful to Quasimodo but still afraid of his appearance. She asks him if he has ever loved anyone, and he replies that he loves her.
Meanwhile, Frollo tries to find a way to get rid of Esmeralda. He bribes a group of criminals to attack Notre Dame and kidnap her. He also informs Gringoire about the plan and tells him to save Esmeralda if he can. Gringoire agrees, but only because he wants to save Djali, Esmeralda's goat, whom he has befriended. The attack on Notre Dame causes a riot in the city, as the people of Paris defend their cathedral against the invaders. Quasimodo fights bravely to protect Esmeralda and Notre Dame, killing many of the attackers with stones, beams, and molten lead. He also mistakes Frollo for one of the assailants and tries to kill him, but Frollo escapes.
During the chaos, Frollo manages to enter Esmeralda's cell and tries to persuade her to go with him. He tells her that Phoebus is dead and that he is the only one who can save her from the mob. He gives her an ultimatum: either she must love him or die. Esmeralda rejects him again and screams for help. Quasimodo hears her cry and rushes to her aid, but he arrives too late. Frollo has handed her over to the King's guard, who have orders to execute her despite the sanctuary. Quasimodo sees Esmeralda being hanged in the Place de Grève and falls into despair.
Frollo watches the execution from a balcony of Notre Dame and laughs wickedly. Quasimodo sees him and pushes him off the balcony, sending him to his death. Quasimodo then goes to the graveyard where Esmeralda's body lies and embraces it. He refuses to leave her side and eventually dies of starvation. Years later, their skeletons are found intertwined in an embrace. 061ffe29dd
